Where to start if you are new
Many first-time readers begin with the Gospel of John, which tells the story of Jesus in a personal way, or with the Psalms, a collection of prayers and songs for every mood. Proverbs gives short, practical wisdom, and Romans explains the heart of the Christian faith. The bookshelf is grouped to help you find your way: the Gospels and Acts, the letters of Paul, and the other letters through Revelation.
Chapters people often look for
- Psalm 23: the shepherd psalm, read at many bedsides and funerals.
- Psalm 91: trust and protection under God's care.
- John 3: includes the well-known verse 16.
- Romans 8: “no condemnation” and a love that does not let go.
- 1 Corinthians 13: the chapter on love.
- Philippians 4: peace and prayer.
- Matthew 5: the opening of the Sermon on the Mount.
- Isaiah 40: comfort and renewed strength.
About the King James Version
The King James Version was completed in 1611 by a team of English scholars. Its language is older than the English we speak, so read slowly and aloud if a sentence feels tangled. Words such as thee, thou and hath are just older forms of you, your and has. The text is in the public domain in the United States.
